Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Cancer Support Community (CSC)?

Cancer Support Community (formerly known as The Wellness Community) provides services, support and education for anyone facing cancer. All of our programs are always provided free of charge. We serve cancer patients, survivors, family members, friends and other caregivers. We help people to improve their health and quality of life — to live longer and to live better.

Does CSC provide medical treatment?

No, we provide the psychosocial care and holistic therapies that complement medical treatment. These include counseling and support groups, nutrition and cooking classes, adapted exercise and mind-body programs, and a wide variety of patient, survivor and caregiver educational seminars and workshops. Local oncologists and other medical providers refer their patients to us, so they will have better treatment outcomes and a higher quality of life. Cancer survivors and their families also attend our programs to stay healthy following their treatment.

Who comes to CSC?

We serve people dealing with any type of cancer, from newly diagnosed to long-term survivors. We also provide support for their family members and other caregivers. Almost every household has been affected by cancer, and all experts expect the incidence of cancer to continue to rise for the next several years. We have served hundreds of people from Lafayette in recent years. You and your loved ones will be welcome to receive support and attend programs at CSC, when it becomes your turn to face cancer.

What kind of organization is CSC?

CSC is a local, community-based nonprofit. We are affiliated with the international Cancer Support Community, which accredits the quality of our services, and has identified us as a Center of Excellence. We have also been awarded Charity Navigator’s highest rating for financial integrity. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, comprised of local residents. We are funded primarily by local donations and we provide all of our services free of charge to local residents.

Where is CSC located now and why are we moving?

We have been in Walnut Creek since 1990, and our center is now located near the Pleasant Hill border. For some time we’ve been seeking a larger, more pastoral location to better serve this community. Our vision is to create a very special rustic campus for health and healing.

Where is the Lafayette site?

We have been donated the 5.75-acre parcel just west of the Lafayette Reservoir. The site is on the south side of Mt. Diablo Boulevard, directly across from the Lafayette Community Garden.

What is the timeline for developing the property?

We are moving carefully and thoughtfully to create a very special community resource on this exceptional site. We have been conducting extensive due diligence on the property for the past few years, and expect to submit an application to the City of Lafayette in 2019. We hope to move to the Lafayette site in late 2021 or early 2022.

How will the Lafayette campus be paid for?

The Lafayette campus will be financed mostly by a capital campaign, with gifts from individuals, companies and foundations. We will also use the proceeds from the eventual sale of our current community center in Walnut Creek. Our goal is to raise a total of $12 million, and there will be
opportunities for every member of our community to make a contribution. For more information, please contact Jim Bouquin at 925.933.0107 or
